What the hell is hashtag - # and @ ?

Updated: Jun 27, 2019

Getting too old to keep up with tech and social media. Slow the f- down!

Words of Wisdom from yoMamaRice. Not all of us had parents who taught us how to live life. My parents couldn't or didn't... I share with you some wisdoms I've learned the hard way in hopes that you can have an easier path.

I guess I have reached that age... you know when you're like -70? That's not old.

I remember when I thought 21 was sooo old. Ancient. Over the hill.

How time flies and how one's POV changes?

Anyway, I had to recently (in the last few years) had to dive into tech and media because of my show "MILFriend" that I created.

(Little plug here: check out www.MILFriendTV.com)

Basically, I had to put on a lot of hats and stop avoiding certain things like... social media!!!

First thing I came across was # and @. I posted quizzically few times on my fb asking what the hell hashtag (#) is and then the symbol @ pertaining to the world wide web. People tried to explain it and I kind of got it but in practice it started to become more clear.

“This symbol - @ - is used in social media platforms to tag you. You know like when you tap on a picture and you are tagging a name to the face? It's almost like someone is tapping you on your shoulder...”

So yoMamaRice is going to lay it out in laymen's term.

This symbol - @ - is used in social media platforms to tag you. You know like when you tap on a picture and you are tagging a name to the face? It's almost like someone is tapping you on your shoulder because when someone use @ then your social media tag like @yomamarice, you will get a notification and ring on your phone that someone tagged you in their post.

This is good to let the person know that you are saying hello and hopefully they will respond with a smiley or a heart.

This symbol - # - is a hashtag. I like to think of is as it looking like a hash brown, kind of, tiny little potato stacked for breakfast, pan fried. It's easy to remember that way. So hashtag - # - is to put you in the google universe, search engines to let the world know whatever you are hashtagging is in existence out in the digital universe. So if you hashtag like #yomamarice every time you mention anything to do with yomamarice then the God in the google sky keeps count and the hashtagged word will rise in the google seo ranks.

So there you go, that's basically what I learned. Please don't hesitate to reach out and add to this since I am still learning.
